Utility
Base64 Encode & Decode
Convert text or files to Base64 and back. Handles Unicode, URL-safe Base64 and data: URIs — all in your browser, nothing uploaded.
Options
Or encode a file
How it works
- 1
Choose Encode or Decode.
- 2
Type or paste your text — or, to encode a file, choose it (up to 10 MB).
- 3
Copy the result. If a Base64 string decodes to a file rather than text, you can download it.
Base64 Encode & Decode — frequently asked questions
- Does it handle emoji and non-English text?
- Yes. Text is converted as UTF-8 before encoding, so accents, emoji and any script round-trip correctly. (The browser's plain btoa() function fails on these.)
- What is URL-safe Base64?
- A variant that uses - and _ instead of + and /, so the result can sit in a URL or file name without escaping. Switch it on when encoding; when decoding, both kinds are accepted automatically. You can also remove the trailing = padding.
- Is Base64 a form of encryption?
- No. It is just a way of writing bytes as text, and anyone can reverse it instantly. Never use it to hide a password or secret.
- Why is the Base64 version bigger?
- It writes every 3 bytes as 4 characters, so the output is about a third larger than the original.
- What is a data: URI?
- A way to embed a whole file inside a web page or stylesheet as text, like data:image/png;base64,…. When you encode a file, turn on 'Output as a data: URI' to get it ready to paste. Decoding also accepts a data: URI.
