Remove Background — frequently asked questions

What kind of photos does this work best on?
Photos with a clear, well-defined subject — people, products, animals — with reasonable contrast against the background get the cleanest edges. Very fine detail like loose hair strands or transparent objects (glass, smoke) are inherently harder for any background-removal AI to isolate perfectly.
What format does the result download as?
PNG — this is required to preserve the transparent area where the background used to be, since JPG doesn't support transparency.
Why does this need AI instead of running locally like other tools?
Identifying which pixels are 'subject' versus 'background' in an arbitrary photo requires a trained image-segmentation model, which needs real compute to run — this isn't something a browser can do on its own.
