Split PDF — frequently asked questions
- Can it split a PDF by its bookmarks or chapters?
- Yes — choose 'By bookmarks'. Each bookmark becomes its own file, named after it (pick whether to use chapters only or sub-sections too). Pages before the first bookmark go into a 'front' file. If the PDF has no bookmarks you'll be told, not handed a useless result.
- How do I split a combined file of invoices or statements?
- Choose 'By found text' and enter something that appears on the first page of each document, such as 'Invoice No' (or a pattern like INV-\d+). Every matching page starts a new file, named from the matched text. You can instead choose 'ends a file' for a closing line like 'End of statement'. This reads the PDF's text, so it doesn't work on scans that are only pictures.
- What is splitting by blank pages for?
- Batch scanning. Put a blank sheet between documents, scan the whole stack as one PDF, and each run of pages between blanks becomes its own file. The blank separator pages are left out. Pick 'Lenient' if your scanner leaves specks or shadows on blank sheets.
- Can I extract just some pages instead of splitting the whole document?
- Yes — use Extract pages and type the pages you want, like 1-3, 7, 10-. They're gathered into one new PDF.
- How do page groups work?
- Separate groups with a semicolon or a new line — for example 1-3; 4-6; 7- makes three PDFs. A trailing dash means 'to the last page'.
- How does splitting by file size work?
- Each part is kept under the size you choose — handy for email limits. Parts can come out a little smaller than the limit. If a single page is bigger than the limit it gets its own file and we tell you.
- Does splitting affect the quality of the pages?
- No. Pages are copied out exactly as they exist in the source file — no recompression, no rasterizing.
- What happens to bookmarks and links after splitting?
- Links that point to pages outside a part won't work there, since that content isn't in that file. This is a structural limit of splitting any PDF.
