Protect Image — frequently asked questions
- Why does this produce a .zip file instead of a locked image file?
- Common image formats (JPG, PNG, WebP) have no built-in password-protection mechanism the way PDF does — there's simply no equivalent feature to use. Wrapping the image in a real, AES-256-encrypted ZIP archive is the standard, genuine way to put a password on a file that doesn't natively support one.
- What can open the protected file?
- Any tool that supports encrypted ZIP archives — 7-Zip and WinRAR on Windows, Archive Utility on macOS, and most file managers on Linux and mobile all handle password-protected ZIPs natively.
- Does Documateo store my password?
- No — the password is used only in memory during processing and is never written to any database or log. If you lose it, there's no way to recover the image from the archive, which is what real encryption means.
