SVG Optimizer — frequently asked questions
- Will my SVG look different?
- It shouldn't. The optimiser only removes comments, editor data, unused namespaces, empty groups and extra whitespace, shortens colours, and rounds numbers. It never merges paths, converts shapes or edits your styles. Compare the before and after preview, and raise the decimals if anything looks off.
- Why remove scripts from an SVG?
- An SVG is not only a picture. Opened directly in a browser it can run JavaScript, which is a security risk when files come from someone else. This option, on by default, deletes script tags, foreignObject blocks, onclick-style attributes and javascript: links.
- How many decimals should I keep?
- 3 is a safe default. For 24 px icons 2 is usually fine. For large, detailed artwork keep 3 or 4. Relative path commands are rounded without drifting, so errors don't build up along a long path.
- Should I remove titles and descriptions?
- Usually not. Screen readers use them, so they are kept unless you switch them off.
- Why did a file come back unchanged?
- It was already about as small as it can safely get. Files are never returned larger than they came in.
- Is my file uploaded anywhere?
- No. The SVG is read and rewritten entirely in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server.
