Rent Receipts for HRA Claims: What Your Employer Actually Needs

By Documateo2 min read

If you're claiming House Rent Allowance (HRA) exemption, your employer's payroll or finance team will usually ask for a rent receipt to support the claim — and a receipt missing the wrong detail can get sent back for correction right when you're trying to close out your tax filing. Here's what it actually needs to include.

What a Rent Receipt Needs

A rent receipt for HRA purposes should show:

  • The landlord's full name and PAN
  • The tenant's name
  • The property address
  • The rent period and amount
  • The payment date and method
  • A receipt number
  • The landlord's signature

The PAN Requirement

If your annual rent exceeds ₹1,00,000 (about ₹8,333/month), the Income Tax Department requires your landlord's PAN on the receipt for the HRA exemption to be allowed. Below that threshold, PAN isn't mandatory, but including it rarely hurts.

The Revenue Stamp Rule

This is the detail most generic rent receipt templates get wrong or skip entirely: under the Indian Stamp Act, 1899, a ₹1 revenue stamp is required on a rent receipt when the payment is made in cash and the amount exceeds ₹5,000. If you pay by bank transfer, UPI, or cheque, no stamp is needed — only cash payments over that threshold trigger the requirement. A receipt generator that doesn't account for payment method will either always show the stamp note or never show it, both of which are wrong some of the time.

Step-by-Step: Generate a Rent Receipt Online

Step 1: Open the Rent Receipt Generator

Step 2: Enter Landlord and Tenant Details

Add the landlord's name and PAN, your own name and PAN, and the property address.

Step 3: Enter the Payment Details

Enter the rent amount, the period it covers, the payment date, and how it was paid. If you select cash and the amount is over ₹5,000, the receipt will automatically note that a revenue stamp is required — you won't need to remember the rule yourself.

Step 4: Download and Sign

Download the PDF, print it, and have your landlord sign it (and affix the stamp, if the note appears) before submitting it to your employer.

One Receipt Per Month

Most payroll teams want a receipt for each month the HRA claim covers, not one receipt for the whole year — generate one for each month you're claiming, with that month's actual payment date.
